Hello guest
Your basket is empty
We’re giving you the inside scoop on our innovative in-house umbrella stand design team (headed by Dawn), and how they transform second hand furniture into functional and funky display stands...
At The Lake District Umbrella Company, we love to be creative, resourceful and open-minded, whether that’s with our umbrella designs, celebrating the unique Lake District climate, or salvage hunting and upcycling to create unique custom built umbrella display units.

Umbrella stands as bright as our Lake District themed umbrellas

Alex, our founder, envisioned a collection of original and eye-catching, but also totally functional umbrella display stands. Stands that would be as bold and bright as our Lake District umbrellas themselves, and that would allow our fabulous stockists to easily house and showcase our products… Which is where the collaboration with Dawn came about.

Dawn is a fellow Lake District dweller, with a background in motorcycle mechanics (she's also Alex's mum, which is very handy!). She has a creative eye and can-do enthusiasm, balanced with a methodical and efficient mind. She knows when to push the limits with upcycling projects, but the limit is always far away enough to allow for lots of fun! She operates from her summerhouse-come-workshop at home - a space dedicated to projects, storing her many tools and tinkering to her heart's content.

Upcycling and reimagining second hand furniture

Furniture and materials for the umbrella display stands are sourced mostly from local charity and second hand shops. Old furniture is usually very solid and well made, and superior to what you buy new for the same price. Plus, it’s better for the environment to reuse and recycle existing items, rather than constantly be buying new, and we are always keen to find ways to make our business greener. We’ve also sourced furniture for our stands from Jayne at Painted By Me in Kendal, which is a fantastic place to go if you are keen to start your own upcycling hobby.

Creativity, precision, and thinking outside the box

Once Dawn has the piece, next comes using her abundance of imagination to see its full potential, and how it can be transformed into an attractive and practical umbrella display stand. In other words - you need to think outside the box, have a bit of patience, and be skilled enough to do a good job! Luckily, Dawn is more than able to do all these things. Inspiration is also sometimes found via Pinterest, and a helping hand or bit of advice from friend and assistant, Mike, is always welcome.

The method behind our Lake District Umbrella Company umbrella stands

Upcycling is creative, but it doesn’t have to be immensely complicated. A children’s chair can become an adorable and fully functional display stand for our Lake District themed umbrellas after cutting some circular holes, sanding, repainting and varnishing. Or turn an old bookshelf on its side, give it some TLC and some hooks, and it’s got a brand new purpose and look!

The finishing touch to any Lake District Umbrella Company umbrella stand is a quality control check by Alex's grandmother, Steff (it's a family affair!). She offers an expert third opinion, after Dawn and Mike, checks them over, does any final touch ups, and gets them ready to take to the stockists.

We’ve had excellent feedback on our upcycled umbrella stands on social media, and we’re so excited to see them proudly displayed at our local stockists, such as Todds of Kendal, Chestnut House and Hayes Garden World
